Two men appear at the Newton home, posing as interviewers working on a national survey. Charlie's father, Joseph Newton, works at a bank, and Uncle Charlie tells him he wants to open an account and deposit $40,000 ($0.6 million today) at his bank. He gives his niece an emerald ring that has someone else's initials engraved inside. Her uncle arrives, and at first, everyone is delighted with his visit, especially young Charlie. She receives wonderful news: Her mother's younger brother (her eponym), Charles Oakley, is arriving for a visit. One day, his landlady tells him that two men came looking for him he sees the two men waiting on the street in front of his room, and he decides to leave town.Ĭharlotte 'Charlie' Newton is a bored teenage girl living in the idyllic town of Santa Rosa, California.

Ĭharles Oakley lives alone in a rooming house. The film was also Alfred Hitchcock's favorite of all of his films. In 1991, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, being deemed 'culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant'. Oakley soon tries to silence the girl, ending with a scuffle where Charlie manages to wrestle herself free just as an oncoming train hits and kills Oakley.

Even after a suspected murderer is killed and the case is closed, her suspicions remain. Charlie slowly realizes Oakley is in fact a wanted man, the 'Merry Widow' killer, something Oakley soon recognizes.
